Tinkerbell is the picture of innocence that Disney loved to illustrate in his films

The past three decades have been a time of rapid and near wholesale change in western culture. Innocence is a thing of the past – some would say with innocence has gone “class” and “respect”, but I’m neither nihilistic nor sanctimoniuos enough to buy that argument – and with the loss of innocence comes a desire to subvert those leftover markers of innocence that are still prevalent in modern culture.

Which brings us to the notion of the adult tinkerbell costume. Tinkerbell, as most people remember her, was the pint sized fairy from the Peter Pan movie who could sprinkle pixie dust on certain people or animals to make the fall asleep, or in certain instances, even do her bidding. Tinkerbell is the picture of innocence that Disney loved to illustrate in his films, so that makes an adult tinkerbell costume completely ripe for subverting the whole notion of Disney’s wholesome, innocent world.

The irony is that Tinkerbell herself, in the film, isn’t exactly the most innocent or wholesome character. She’s actually rather jealous, vain and self-centered. And she wears a very, very short skirt. Take this excerpt from exampleessays.com:

In 1953, Disney released the classic cartoon tale Peter Pan. The movie has become a staple in American children’s film. Despite what one might think, Peter Pan contains blatant sexual stereotypes and constantly portrays females as conniving and jealous.

Tinker Bell’s jealousy of Peter and Wendy’s friendship portrays the most obvious case of jealousy in Peter Pan. Throughout the movie, whenever a third party mentions Wendy, Tinker Bell turns crimson red and gets infuriated at just the thought of her. Even before Tinker Bell meets Wendy, she gets agitated at just the sight of Peter talking to her. During the scene where Peter is first introduced to the audience, Wendy tries to give Peter a kiss because he complimented her stories. Tinker Bell will not allow this and flies towards Wendy to pull on her hair…

So going in an adult tinkerbell costume at least makes some sense not only on the level of fun, but in the larger context of society’s subversion of traditional “morals” and “values” as rendered through the lens of Disney’s most famous films. It’s actually a concept that cracks me right up.

Of course, that’s assuming that “adult” means “sexy,” which ends up being a whole new can of moralistic worms in and of itself. Personally I find the sexualization of innocent icons to be, as I said, hilarious. But be aware that if you do as much, you’ll be making a political statement of your own that is sure to draw some strong reactions.

One of the best features of the Disney Tinkerbell Halloween costumes is that the character is clearly recognizable. There’s no mistaking who your child’s character is, so there’s no chance the person opening their door with a basket of goodies asking, “You’re so cute, but who are you?” In a Disney costume, that little old lady may be tempted to be a bit more generous, too. “Oh, here, take a few more! You’re just sweet!”

When I worked on my Halloween costume, I decided to do something special with it. Rather than just buy a normal costume, or make something simple out of junk around the house, I decided to make it all myself so that it would be the best costume which I had ever worn. After thinking about it for a while, I decided to be a fairy. I found some delightfully tacky sequined dresses for very cheap at the thrift store, and ripped them up, attaching the sequins in haphazard patterns to thin see through scarves which I wrapped around my body. I then painted my face silvery, with pearlescent eye shadow and green hair coloring. Of course, the piece de resistance of my whole costume was the fairy wings

There are many ways to make your own fairy wings. If you have any experience with costume design at all, and if you think about it for just a moment, you could probably come up with a new way how to make your own fairy wings. The way I made mine was quite simple. I first created a frame to hold the fairy wings out of clothes hangers. I know it sounds kind of crude, but there’s no point to make your own fairy wings if you’re going to be expensive about it – half the fun is turning inexpensive junk into something beautiful and radiant. The next thing I did was to make a fairy wings pattern to cut out of cloth that matched my frame. I attached the fairy wings not with a needle and thread, or with tape, but instead with an elaborate criss cross of brightly colored wires. These wires shimmered themselves, and farther added to the effect of the costume.

The hardest part of making fairy wings is figuring out how to mount them. Fortunately, I had the perfect solution. I attached the wire to the back of a black corset with black masking tape. Soon I was laced up and ready to go. The best thing was that the scarves and sequins from the rest of the costume covered up the masking tape, while making it look like the fairy wings actually came out of my back. Needless to say, Halloween was a complete success. I danced all night and made many new friends, all of whom were deeply impressed by my costume, and sported fantastic outfits of their own.

Little girls tend to go for ideas that have wings, wands, and special powers-Fairies fit right in with this

You are not going to find many young girls that are not fascinated, at least for a little, with fairies. They may play fairies with their friends, and they may also want to be a fairy for Halloween. They may not ask for it on their own, but they may love the idea if you suggest it to them. Little girls tend to go for ideas that have wings, wands, and special powers. Fairies fit right in with this. If they already have a green fairy Halloween costume that they wear all of the time, they may be all set to go, but you may want to add some special touches for Halloween night.
Autumn Fairy Toddler/Child Costume
When it comes to a green fairy Halloween costume, there are some great ideas out there that you can go out and buy as a whole. For some girls, this works well, but you do have to be careful how you do it. They may see something that you bring home and tell you that it is not what they want and you are going to have to make them wear it, or go out and buy something else. If you want to go get a green fairy Halloween costume this way, you should take your little girl with you. That way she can choose what she wants, and then can not argue that it is not quite right.

You can also find some amazing pieces for your fairy Halloween costume if you look online. You can also find some complete costumes that are going to be just what your daughter wants to wear. You can easily have her go online with you and look through the choices that you can find on various web sites. Make sure you check out many different sites, as each may have something different and also, they have different prices. Order early to be sure it gets there on time, and be careful with the sizing. Go one size up if you are not sure to be certain it is going to fit them.
